The Ranger GRX sits alongside the Ranger APEX as one of AMZcycle's premium dual-battery gravel bikes, but it takes a different approach. Where the APEX runs SRAM drivetrain and a rigid carbon fork, the GRX runs Shimano's GRX gravel groupset and adds a SR Suntour air-spring suspension fork with 50mm of travel. Same Toray T800 carbon frame, same Bafang M820 motor, same dual Samsung battery capacity — different drivetrain philosophy and different front-end setup.

The result is a bike that's slightly more capable on rougher terrain due to the fork travel, and that runs arguably more repairable/serviceable components given Shimano GRX's market penetration versus SRAM APEX at the LBS level. At $5,499 — $200 more than the APEX — you're essentially choosing between the SRAM ecosystem with a rigid fork or the Shimano ecosystem with a modest front suspension. Both are legitimate choices depending on where and how you ride.

Motor and Power System

Bafang M820-36, 250W continuous, 350W peak, 75 N·m. Same motor family as the Ranger APEX. The 36V system prioritizes efficiency and weight over raw output — which is the right call on a bike designed for 80–100 mile days. You're not sprinting; you're covering ground with sustained, natural-feeling assist. The torque sensor scales assist with your effort, so it responds to how hard you're pushing, not just whether the cranks are moving.

Dual Battery: The Range That Matters

Primary Samsung 18650 pack: 36V 10.5Ah, 378Wh, UL2271 certified, IPX5 rated. Secondary optional bottle battery: 36V 7Ah, 252Wh — same certifications. Combined: 630Wh and up to ~100 miles. Primary alone: 50–62 miles. The secondary battery mounts as a bottle cage unit, so plan your accessory mounts accordingly if you're running both packs on a hot day. Charges in 6–8 hours. The Bafang 2.4" display shows battery level across both packs and lets you manage assist levels.

The Frame: T800 Carbon, Gravel Geometry

Toray T800 carbon fiber throughout. 700C wheel size, 142×12mm rear thru-axle, UDH derailleur hanger, FICR internal routing, flat mount brakes. The geometry is gravel-specific with a longer reach, higher stack, and 70° head tube angle — designed for stability and comfort over long days rather than the aggressive position of a road bike. Lower chainstay design gives it a cleaner silhouette and improves the weight distribution when loaded.

The dual battery system is built into the frame design — the secondary bottle battery mounts to a dedicated cage location, not a jury-rigged afterthought.

The Fork: SR Suntour GVX Air-Spring

The GRX gets a SR Suntour GVX air-spring gravel fork with 50mm of travel and a 700C/12×100mm thru-axle. 50mm is modest — you're not descending the same way you would on a trail bike — but it's enough to take the edge off rough gravel surfaces, chunky forest roads, and chunky trail crossings that would rattle you on a rigid fork. Air-spring tuning lets you dial compliance to your weight and preference. On loaded gravel touring days or rough terrain where your hands would otherwise take a beating, that 50mm matters.

Drivetrain: Shimano GRX

Shimano RX820 1×12 — shifter, rear derailleur, brakes all in the GRX hydraulic ecosystem. The cassette is Shimano M8100 12-speed 10–51T (Shimano's XT mountain cassette, which is notably better quality than a mid-tier cassette — a thoughtful spec choice). Chain is Shimano M6100 12s. Chainring is Bafang G532 44T, purpose-built for the M820 motor's ISIS interface.

GRX is Shimano's dedicated gravel groupset, and it shows in the lever ergonomics — the hoods and drops are shaped for gravel riding postures rather than adapted from road geometry. The hydraulic integration in the lever body gives you reliable, consistent brake feel with the shift action in the same unit. Service is straightforward at any Shimano-stocked shop, which covers most of the country.

The dropper post lever is integrated into the ST-R610 shifter — no separate remote clutter on the bar.

Brakes

Shimano RX820 hydraulic, 2-piston, Flat Mount, paired with Shimano SM-RT70 Centerlock rotors at 160mm front and rear. SM-RT70 is Shimano's mid-tier gravel/road rotor — same unit used across Deore XT builds, with a good heat dissipation track record. The 2-piston flat mount setup is standard for the gravel category and balances stopping power with modulation well. Reliable, serviceable, consistent.

Crankarm and Saddle

The crankarm is a Samox carbon fiber unit, 175mm. Like the Ranger APEX, carbon cranks on a gravel endurance bike dampen pedaling vibration over time — a comfort benefit that builds across multi-hour rides rather than being noticeable on a short test ride. The saddle is a Selle Italia FLITE — proven endurance geometry, well-regarded in the long-distance gravel community.

Tires

Schwalbe G-One Overland 365 in 700×50C. All-season compound, meaning grip performance holds up in cold and wet conditions better than a standard summer tire. The 50mm width gives you enough volume for lower pressures on rough terrain without excess rolling resistance on road sections. This is the same tire spec as the Ranger APEX — Schwalbe's gravel benchmark for good reason.

The Dropper Post

KS Rage iS, 27.2mm, 65mm travel, air spring. Smaller travel than the KS 860i on the APEX — appropriate for gravel use where you're adjusting saddle height for comfort and mounting/dismounting rather than aggressive descending. The smaller diameter (27.2mm vs 30.9mm) reflects the gravel geometry frame spec.
